Applejack is one of the main characters in My Little Pony: Frendship is Magic and a minor character in Something Sweet to Bite. Where she became one of the first victims of the CandyMare, along with her younger sister Apple Bloom.

Appearance[]

As a pony, Applejack is a light-orange earth pony, with blonde hair and green eyes. She had three freckles on each cheek and her cutie mark consists of three red apples. She also wore a brown stetson and has her mane and tail tied with red bands.

As a ghoul, Applejack's appearance became the texture and consistency of caramel due to the incident involving the Candy Mare and the cauldron of caramel. Her eyes are completely coated over in a green slime similar to a sour apple.

Personality[]

Similar to her appearance in the MLP: FiM TV show, Applejack is usually kind at heart, tough and resilient. Before her encounter with the Candy Mare, she's seen attending to the production of caramel apples without the help of Big Macintosh, Granny Smith or Apple Bloom. As well as this, she is willing to place herself in harm's way to save the lives of others. When noticing her younger sister at the bottom of the cauldron, her first instinct is to try and get her out despite the scolding heat of the caramel inside.

History[]

Night Before Nightmare Night[]

On the night before Nightmare Night, Applejack was working on Caramel Apples for Nightmare Night. Using a giant cauldron full of boiling hot caramel to dip apples in, she quickly noticed Apple Bloom was missing. After not getting a response from calling for her sister, she started walking around the barn to look for her, only for the fires under the cauldron to suddenly burst open. She quickly ran back and dragged the cauldron off the fire, afterwards she looked back in the barn to see all of her caramel apples had been eaten. Thinking that Apple Bloom and her friends had did it, she called for Apple Bloom again, only to instead hear the Candy Mare's giggling coming from the cauldron. She took a peak inside the cauldron, to find Apple Bloom's, caramel-covered body. Screaming, she quickly pulled her sister out of the pot and tried to clean her wounds. After failing to save Apple Bloom's life, she then heard Candy Mare giggle again. Believing it to belong to her sister's killer, she runs out the barn to try and find whoever it is.

Death[]

When looking for the culprit, she is tripped over by the giggling Candy Mare, causing her to fall into the cauldron herself. She attempts to climb out with relatively futile tries as the scorching sides become coated in caramel and her own fur. The Candy Mare then reveals herself to Applejack, stating her iconic phrase before lunging forward. This results in one side of Applejack's face being bitten off but - during the attack - she is able to escape into the barn nearby by crawling away. Without much to barricade the door, she used herself instead to try and buy herself time to fend off the creature. In a desperate moment of realization, she tries to scream out for any pony nearby to hear her inside. The attempt was futile again as the Candy Mare destroys the door almost instantly upon impact. Several fragments of it are shot back at Applejack as the candy mutant gradually made it's way into the barn, ready to consume it's newest victim.

Resurrection and Transformation[]

When Scootaloo and Sweetie Bell arrive at Sweet Apple Acres to inform Apple Bloom of the situation involving the bet between them, Diamond Tiara and Silver Spoon. However, when approaching the front door to her home, the pair notice how still and quiet everything is around them. After knocking on the door with little to no reply, Scootaloo shouts out to Apple Bloom and Applejack whilst pressing her ear against the bark hoping to hear somepony approach and answer. The unsettling atmosphere is further induced when - as Sweetie Bell suggests they might be in town preparing for the festival - the barn doors swing inwards on broken hinges, prompting them to move in closer and investigate.

As Scootaloo calls out again, a giggle followed by Applejack greeting the pair can be heard in the darkness of the barn. They take note of how friendly yet distant the voice is despite only being a few feet in front of them. When Sweetie Bell chimes in to tell Applejack about needing Apple Bloom, Applejack mentions about just finishing up the caramel apples, asking the girls if they could try some and give feedback on how well she did. Only her silhouette is visible as Scootaloo declines and yet again requests for Apple Bloom so they can all head off into Ponyville for the festival. Applejack suddenly becomes passive aggressive at this, gesturing and calling out to her younger sister in the barn as well. To the girls' relief, Apple Bloom's face gradually works its way through the darkness. Both girls then explain the bad news they were there to tell in the first place. Apparently, the spells they had been using from the ancient book came from an old ritual meant to keep the Candy Mare at bay. And, by using the ancient book of spells for their Nightmare Night bet, both Pinkie Pie and Twilight Sparkle found out and consequently punished them by forbidding any trick-or-treating. Additionally, they would have to pass out candy to any colts and fillies who knocked on the library door instead.

In spite of Apple Bloom instigating the bet herself hours ago against their rivals, she's not disheartened when Scootaloo discusses the outcome to it. To substitute, she also recommends the girls to come inside and have a taste of the sweet caramel apples, hoping to entice them by mentioning how delicious they are. Luckily, both Scootaloo and Sweetie Bell notice the sudden shift in behavior concerning Apple Bloom's previous reactions to Diamond Tiara's and Silver Spoon's teasing. They respond with more refusal at the request to enter the barn and try the apples, insisting they have to leave now to the library as the sun was going down and it'd be dark soon. Silence lingers for a moment before Apple Bloom speaks up about needing help getting into her costume. She asks the girls to enter the barn and help her put it on. Scootaloo immediately questions why Applejack can't help her do so whilst using the quick interrogation to talk about why her voice seemed to have an echo. Sweetie Bell chips in with a question behind both Apple Bloom's and Applejack's insistent nature to try and get the girls inside.

At this point, Apple Bloom's face began to rise above the two fillies, revealing the gruesome fate of their former friend. To torment them further, the puppeteer behind the body uses her voice mimicry to make the young filly's head mimic speech such as "What's the matter with you girls? Don't you like apples?". Eventually, with her disguise fooled, the Candy Mare makes her presence known to them via giggling manically and mimicking the voices of multiple other victims (including Apple Bloom and Applejack). The two girls escape and head off to Ponyville in hopes somepony could help in whatever they had witnessed.

Applejack - later on in "Something Sweet to Bite Too" - is seen becoming a part of the Candy Mare's candied army to kidnap Princess Luna and torment the rest of Ponyville's inhabitants.

Trivia[]

  • In the sequels to the story, it's presumed that she - alongside many other ponies - are reverted back into their regular selves again after Zecora discovers a cure to the curse.
  • Even though Applejack is a main character within the original inspiration to the grimdark story, her appearance in the tale is brief after her encounter with the Candy Mare in Something Sweet to Bite. She's only mentioned indirectly via the army of transformed town's folk.
